Tasmota is an alternative firmware, written by Theo Arends, for devices based on the ESP8266 microcontroller. These are, for example, “Smart home” devices such as lamps, dimmers, fans, switches, and sensors.

Sonoff is a popular brand with a wide range of devices that you can use to flash Tasomota on. Devices of this brand are available from Banggood, among others.

The firmware provides, among other things, simple configuration with webUI, OTA updates, automation using timers or rules, extensibility and fully local control over MQTT, HTTP, serial or KNX. Written for Arduino IDE and PlatformIO.

By fashing an alternative firmware on devices you can also let them communicate with home automation software such as Node-RED and Home Assistant.
